There is a long composting tradition in Maine and Maritime Canada, especially among the region's salmon, wild blueberry and shellfish processors. In the late 1980's the State formed the Maine Compost Team - a group of specialists from the State Departments of Agriculture and Environmental Protection and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service - to help many of these processors set up successful composting programs. After retiring from the US Navy in 1984, where I had spent most of my 20 years as a jet engine mechanic, I decided I wanted to start my own business. After doing some extensive research I decided on "Saw and Tool Sharpening." After graduating from the Foley-Belsaw Institute in Kansas City, Missouri in 1990, I bought my first sharpening tool and was on my way. It wasn't long before my sharpening customers began to ask if I could tune up their lawnmowers and chain saws. Even with my Naval background I decided it would be best to "update" my skills. After completing a course through Southern Maine Technical College, I started accepting machines for tunes-ups and minor repairs. It wasn't long before I realized more manufacturer specific training was involved, so it was off to more schools.

Mike Wagner, owner of Ossipee Trail Garden Center, was born and raised at the Wagner Farm on Libby Avenue in Gorham, Maine. Mike’s parents, Nelson and Irene, had a working farm with animals and crops. Nelson was the tree warden in town and Irene was affectionately known as the “Strawberry Lady.” The farm offered vegetable and annual seedlings along with pick-your-own strawberries. In the winter, Nelson would harvest trees, saw the logs and Mike and his brothers were recruited to make seedling boxes. The greenhouse at the farm had a Queen Atlantic stove and Irene would sterilize the soil in the oven and raise her homemade bread dough on top of the stove. To this day Mike still recalls the smells from bread and soil permeating the air in the greenhouse.In 1986, Mike decided to start a business of his own. He purchased a plot of land in Standish and started growing plants. With the knowledge of plants he acquired from being raised on his parent’s farm as well as the knowledge he obtained by taking horticulture classes and attending lectures and seminars, he opened Burnt Meadow Greenhouse. Burnt Meadow was a small operation opened for a few months out of the year. Mike wanted to expand the business and hours of operation so he began looking for land suitable for greenhouses, nursery and display gardens. In 1995 Mike found a piece of property on Ossipee Trail in Gorham, Maine, inspiring him to open Ossipee Trail Garden Center. The garden center is on 16 acres of land with five greenhouses, a nursery and the beginnings of expansive display gardens. Each year new varieties of plants along with the tried and true are available to our customers. Ossipee Trail is a full service garden center.
